Mitsuwa Marketplace

Yesterday I went with two friends out to Mitsuwa Marketplace in Elk Grove Village. It's a Japanese market that sells groceries, books, and pottery (among other things), and it also has a food court with really great, but supercheap, sushi. We stuffed ourselves in the food court, and then wandered around looking at the merchandise. I wasn't planning to buy anything, but when I saw that the bamboo steamer baskets cost only $12, I had to get one. Now I just need to make a trip to Chinatown to buy some frozen bao and pot stickers. Or I could just use it to steam fish and vegetables, but where's the fun in that?

I also tried some of the candy. The Crunky candy is green tea flavored and has crispy rice in it, like a Nestle crunch bar. It's a little bland, but not bad.

I really like the bittersweet chocolate Pocky. They're thin pretzel sticks dipped in candy coatings of various flavors. I decided to go with chocolate, rather than strawberry or apple yogurt. For some reason, this one is designated as the "men's" candy--presumably because women can't handle strong, dark chocolate? I dunno. I like it.

So if you like sushi and you're ever out in the northwest suburbs, I highly recommend checking out Mitsuwa Marketplace. You'll get a wonderful meal for a great price, and you might find some unique Japanese treats, too.
