An Oasis in the Food Desert

I was thrilled to read on Hyde Park Progress that a gourmet food store, Zaleski & Horvath Market Cafe , will be opening near me this spring. The owners of said store are also writing a blog about their progress; their trials with the Byzantine Chicago zoning board are eye opening and definitely worth reading. Ever since the 47th Street Co-Op closed, there hasn't been a place in K-Wood to get really good food. There is a janky Sav-a-Lot at 47th and Cottage Grove, and a little corner store, One-Stop Food & Liquor, at 43rd and Lake Park. I've never been to One-Stop because it's out of my way, but I hear that although the owner tried to bulk up the produce selection after the Co-Op closed, he simply doesn't have room for many choices. The Sav-a-Lot is fine if you just need basics, such as milk or potatoes, but there aren't many spices to speak of, much of the merchandise is off-brand, and you have to bag your own groceries. Tempting Cookbooks

I was killing time at Borders this morning, between my eye doctor appointment and meeting a couple of friends for lunch, and they have all the new holiday cookbooks prominently on display. With their beautiful covers and gorgeous pictures, it's food porn at its finest. I was sorely tempted by two in particular. One is the new Ina Garten "Barefoot Contessa" book. The other is the new Paula Deen holiday cookbook. The Garten one is definitely more elegant and upscale, with some really interesting recipes and ideas for entertaining. The Deen one is more homey and folksy and actually appeals to me a little more. It's not that I need yet another brownie with mint frosting recipe, but the stories and sidebars are really charming. Also, Paula Deen reminds me a lot of my late mother (both her appearance and her mannerisms), and her food is very much like the food my mom cooked for us when I was growing up--Southern comfort food. PBS: The Poor Woman's Food Network

I love to watch food and cooking shows, but I don't have cable TV, so the shows on PBS are the only ones available to me. My 2 favorite shows are Jacques Pepin's "Fast Food My Way" and "Simply Ming" with Ming Tsai. Pepin is like a smart, kindly uncle who, instead of showing you how to change the oil in your car, shows you how to efficiently put together wonderful meals. Ming Tsai is very creative, with his "master recipe" plan that can be used in multiple dishes. I also have a huge crush on Ming because he's just so dang cute. However, they aren't showing those shows on either of the Chicago PBS stations now, for whatever reason. Until/unless they come to their senses and bring back Jacques and Ming, I'm reduced to watching the also-rans: "Lidia's Family Table," "Everyday Food," "America's Test Kitchen," and "BBQ University."
