Green City Market

Yesterday I went with a friend to the Green City farmers market in Lincoln Park. This is the biggest of Chicago's farmers markets, and I was not disappointed. Our plan was to buy some food and then take it back to my friend's house and cook it for lunch. We got some pasture-raised, grass-fed pork chops, some rhubarb, asparagus, and some Russian banana potatoes (which are long, skinny, and yellow inside, just like bananas). We wanted to get strawberries, too, but they were out already; so for our dessert we did have to get strawberries from a supermarket, but everything else came from the farmers market.

We cooked the pork chops in my favorite stand-by sauce: maple syrup and Dijon mustard. The potatoes were turned into a potato salad, and we broiled the asparagus with some balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Finally, we made a rhubarb/strawberry strudel and served it over vanilla ice cream. Everything turned out beautifully. The pork was very flavorful, a huge improvement over grocery store meat. The vegetables were perfect, and the dessert was sublime. This grand experiment went very well and we hope to do it again soon.
