Why Didn't I Think of This Sooner?

The other night I made some hot chocolate, and instead of putting vanilla in it, I used triple sec. Wow! It's like there was a party in my mouth and everyone was invited. Orange, chocolate, and cinnamon are a triple flavor threat. Good, good stuff. Here's the recipe:

1 1/2 T sugar
1 1/2 T unsweetened cocoa powder
dash of salt
dash of cinnamon
1/4 to 1/2 tsp. triple sec (or vanilla or kahlua)
1 C. milk

Put the dry ingredients in a small saucepan. Add 1 T of the milk and whisk until a smooth paste forms. Add the rest of the milk and whisk constantly over medium-low heat until all the solids are dissolved and the cocoa is hot.

You can make it in the microwave but it's a little more involved. First, put the dry ingredients in a big mug. Then add about a tablespoon of the milk and whisk with a fork until a smooth paste forms and there are no lumps. Now gradually stir in the rest of the milk. Heat on high for 1 minute, then stir again. Repeat this step (heat 1 minute and then stir) for a total of 3 minutes. If you just put it in the microwave for 3 minutes, 2 bad things will happen. First, the milk will probably boil over, and second, the cocoa solids will not be completely dissolved and will form a skin on the top of the cocoa, and that's just nasty. Remember: good things take time. Enjoy!
